Out of my gen ed classes, the skills that I learned in my English classes have helped me in creating my designs the most. I have learned that correct grammar is very important for a design to be successful.
I did run into a grammar issue earlier this semester. We had just finished up our ads that we created for our magazine in our Design Development class, and Tony, our instructor, was showing them on the screen for our classmates to give feedback. When my ad was shown, the first thing that one of my classmates noticed with the first word of my heading was spelled incorrectly. I meant to say “Intensify”, but ended up forgetting a letter and writing “Intesify”. In my defense, I did use a script font, and the cursive typography did make it harder to spot the mistake, but it was still noticed, and it made my ad seem unprofessional.
A small grammar mistake can be made anywhere, and instantly make your design appear unprofessional. That is why I have been remembering to utilize spell check and have someone else proofread my work before finalizing it.
