One Design Problem a Day

Waiting for inspiration for a design to come to you can be a trap as a graphic design student. Staring at a blank art board waiting for the creativity to hit you does not work the way you would want it to. There are rare occasions where it does show up, but most times, it absolutely does not.

That’s why I have implemented a simple approach into my process to avoid getting trapped: one design problem a day.

Instead of waiting for the inspiration to come to me, I challenge myself to create something that forces me to think and create something new. Whether it is limiting myself from using tools that I am familiar with, or creating something that is completely not my style, I just design until I finish the project. I am not striving for perfection here; my goal is to practice and gain experience.

Design is pretty much just problem-solving with creativity. Every design needs to clearly communicate something to someone using color, type, and layout that work together, while using visual elements that catch the target audience’s attention. The challenging part is figuring out how.

This process is great for me because it removes the pressure of perfection, and I learn something new every time, even when they don’t turn out great.
