The STC Veterans’ Club asked our design class to design and install a custom window cling for their space. Each of us designed one for them to choose from, and although my design wasn’t picked, I was honored to receive an honorable mention! It was awesome to see the project come to life, knowing that it was created by one of my classmates.
Before we even started designing, we measured the windows to make sure everything would be the correct size. This step proved itself to be very important because once it was all printed and cut, 3 of the window clings were 1/4 too wide, so we had to trim a little off. That showed us that precision really matters when working on something that has to fit perfectly in a physical space.

Printing the clings was an interesting process because the printer and material were new to me. We used perforated vinyl, which I learned how to properly load into the printer as well. Once everything was printed, we cut out each design and headed to install them.
Installing these was a team effort. We made sure to clean the windows before applying the window clings. We started by peeling back the top portion of the cling to line it up exactly with the window. Then one person pulls down the backing while the other person uses the squeegee tool to smooth it to the glass and remove any air bubbles.

The final result looked pretty good, especially since it was most of our first time doing this. The only issue that we ran into was that the clings were a lot more transparent than expected because of the sunlight coming from inside the room. We are still considering if we will do something to fix that so that the Veterans Club can have privacy in their room. Our options so far are either to redo the clings with non-perforated material, or add something behind the window to reduce the transparency. Even with that issue, I think this was a great project overall, and it was a great hands-on learning experience.
